Adult Acne

Are you annoyed, frustrated, or concerned about your acne?
You are not alone. Acne doesn't always go away just because your teenage years have passed. For many adults, acne leads to feelings of insecurity, anxiety, and embarrassment, sometimes to the point where it interferes with daily interactions like dating, work, and going out with friends.

Who gets acne?
Acne is one of the most common skin disorders in the United States, affecting millions of adults. In fact, acne affects up to 95% of people at some point in their lifetime!2 While some adults may not develop their acne until their 20's or 30's, for many others acne starts when they are teenagers and persists all the way through adulthood. If you still continue to struggle with acne, even as an adult, it's probably time to see a dermatologist or other physician. Reasons to see a doctor...

So what causes acne?
Despite what you may have heard, acne is NOT caused by:

  • Diet
  • Personal hygiene
  • Stress

So what really causes acne? Acne begins beneath the skin-long before it shows on the surface.

Natural changes in the body can trigger acne:

  1. Changing hormone levels increase the production of an oily substance called sebum. It normally flows out of the hair follicles, but in some cases gets stuck and plugs the pores.
  2. Normal p. acnes bacteria and dead skin cells collect, further plugging up the follicles.
  3. An overgrowth of p. acnes bacteria irritates and reddens the skin, and when this inflammation spreads and breaks through to the surface, we call it acne.

Adult acne can range from mild to severe. Read more about different types of acne.
