Teen Acne

Are you annoyed, frustrated, or concerned about your acne?
You are not alone. For many teens, acne leads to feelings of insecurity, anxiety, and embarrassment, sometimes to the point where it interferes with social interactions like sports, dating, and eating out. In addition, many teenagers feel confusion about what they are told about acne, due to common myths and misconceptions about acne.

Who gets acne?
Acne is one of the most common skin disorders in the United States, affecting many millions of teenagers. In fact, acne affects up to 95% of people at some point in their lifetime! While acne is incredibly common both in teenage boys and girls, it tends to:

  • be more severe in boys.
  • affect more teenage boys than teenage girls. However, in young adults, acne is more common with young women.

So what causes acne?
Despite what you may have heard, acne is NOT caused by:

  • Diet
  • Personal hygiene
  • Stress

Test your knowledge about these and other acne myths1

So what really causes acne? Acne begins beneath the skin-long before it shows on the surface.

Natural changes in the body can trigger acne1

  1. Changing hormone levels increase the production of an oily substance called sebum. It normally flows out of the hair follicles, but in some cases gets stuck and plugs the pores.
  2. Normal p. acnes bacteria and dead skin cells collect, further plugging up the follicles.
  3. An overgrowth of p. acnes bacteria irritates and reddens the skin, and when this inflammation spreads and breaks through to the surface, we call it acne.

What can I do to help?

  • Talk to your parents - while they may or may not fully understand what you're feeling and how your acne bothers you, they likely experienced acne when they were younger and will want to help you. So be honest with them, and talk with them about seeing a dermatologist or other doctor.
  • See a dermatologist - these doctors are specially trained to deal with problems of the skin, and in fact treat teenagers with acne almost every day! Find a doctor near you.
  • Ask your dermatologist about how NeoBenz Micro may be able to help your acne.
  • Follow a healthy skincare regimen.
